Maternity Tees DIY

Since most maternity clothes are hideous these days and I love a great ruched tee I decided to make some of my own!

What you need for this project

Tees, maternity or non maternity.  If you are going with non-maternity, size up so you have some extra length.

Tees before

And some elastic, I like a thinner elastic, since it works better with the seam of the tees

elastic

Cut the elastic to length by stretching it the length of the seam of the tee.  Then pin it to the seam of the tee about 1/2″ from the armpit.

Elastic

Sew the elastic to the tee, while pulling the elastic tight.  I like to do a zig-zag lockstitch at both ends to ensure that it stays put, and then use a straight stitch the full length of the tee.

Finished

Repeat on both sides!

Stay tuned for more maternity DIYs over the next few months as The Bump grows and I need new clothes!

  1. To do for a maternity shirt (I’m preggers) would you use a t that’s a size larger than your normal size? This whole maternity clothes thing is way confusing for newbies!!!

    1. Hi Amanda! Congrats on the new addition!
Yes, go a size, or two; larger. Make sure that it’s long enough to cover the bump for as long as you want. The first round I made are still ok, and I went one size up. But I will be needing to make some belly bands to extend the lifespan of those tees. I will post when I do that!

Oh, and I recommend getting the “bathing suit” elastic, or something soft. The kind I used on the first round itch like crazy!

  2. What a great idea! Thanks for sharing! I will most definitely be “stealing” this from you as I too am having a hard time finding cute, inexpensive maternity clothes!

    1. Something with some stretch works well. Also longer tees and tanks are a great option! The extra fabric is what you want to look for.
