Throwback Thursday

20130514-175450.jpg

Remember when I made my own maternity jeans?  Yeah I loved them, and wore them all.the.time.

It’s nearly Hadley’s 1st birthday, so I am seriously mooning over the pregnancy pics lately.  It’s been a whirlwind 2 years-ish since this journey began.

It’s been a blast.

Throwback Thursday

Live long & Prosper

Remember that time I was a total Trekkie?  Well, I mean I still am

This was the day that Into Darkness premiered and I got tickets to a midnight showing.  It was awesome.  I seriously love that cute little belly that I had.  And that shirt was perfect for being pregnant.  I wore it all the time.  I got funny looks, but never unwanted pregnancy and child rearing advice.  Woot.

Chewsday Tuesday – Peach Fro-yo

20140623-023847-9527252.jpg

Last week we were feeling the craving for Fro-yo since it was so hot here in Florida, so we pulled out the food processor, and got to it!

Ingredients:
Frozen peaches (any fruit works, we just went with peaches.
Vanilla Greek yogurt
A few ice cubes

Directions:
Add ingredients to food processor or blender, and blend until smooth.

There are no measurements here, because you can make as much or as little as you want.

We dressed ours up with lots of goodies like chia seeds, berries, almonds, and even some raw cacao nibs! Yummo!!

Workout Wednesday – Exercising while traveling

Ah vacation!!  We are in the midst of our Florida vacation, our first as a family of 3.  We decided that this would be an ideal time to jump start focusing on living a healthier life together.  Plus my Sister-in-Law has also been focusing on her fitness journey so the three of us are kicking butt this week!  In addition to my half marathon training this week we are doing this Hit The Deck workout throughout the week while we are traveling.

I love this workout because you can change it up daily by switching out what moves you assign to each suit.

hit the deck

How it works:

Assign a different move to each suit.  Face cards are equal to 10, Aces are equal to 11.  Then draw the card and do the move!  And here are some ideas for those 4 moves…

  • Burpees
  • Thrusters (Use the hotel chairs, but watch the ceiling!)
  • Squats
  • Lunges
  • Push-ups
  • Jumping Jacks
  • Seated Cross-body Punches (Sit on floor, legs up and punch across your body twisting and engaging your obliques.  Grab 2 full water bottles for weights!)
  • Step ups (Use those hotel room chairs for this one)
  • High knees
  • Mountain Climbers
  • Bridges
  • Glute Kickbacks
  • Keep the Jokers and assign them a “Wildcard” move, and make them equal to 15, 20, 25…you get the picture!

This is also a great buddy workout, and can be done at home too!  Or at the gym…the key to loving working out is to keep it interesting and to change it up!  You will see more and better results if you keep your body guessing.

Do you have a go-to travel workout routine?  How do you keep your workouts on track while on the road?

(Half) Marathon Monday – The Training plan

half marathon monday

2 weeks ago I registered for my first half in nearly 2 years…or it will have been more than that by the time I cross the finish line.  And after not running for well over a year consistently due to pregnancy and the winter from hell here in Minnie, I am basically starting all over in my training.  I would have considered myself an intermediate runner after my last half, but I truly feel that I am right back at the beginner stage, even though I have been racking up the miles the last few months.  I really want to dive into training and be consistent and committed.  So I am going to share my training on mondays in this new series where I will talk training plans, gear, nutrition, injury prevention, and recovery.

In part one of this series we are talking training plans!

I have written myself a training plan that I am very happy with.  One that is challenging, yet allows for lots of rest, and a variety of different workouts.  I am really glad that I trained for my first half with TNT and had some old plans to look at for inspiration.

The plan that I created for myself is really customized for me and my current level of training but creating a plan that works for you is very easy!

Here are some tips to help you create a half or full marathon training plan:

  1. Make sure you build in dedicated rest days, active rest days, and X-training.  I kept these days very consistent in my plan.  For example, Sundays & Thursdays are my dedicated rest days.  I will cross train on Tuesdays and Fridays.
  2. Do not neglect hill repeats, and speed training!!  My half is along a river, so hills are guaranteed.  I elected to schedule 1 session of hill repeats every 3 weeks or so during the first few months of training, and then every 2 weeks in August and September as I want to be strong on the hills this go round.  I also scheduled several KOB (Kenyan Out & Backs – run out, then run back faster) sessions during my training, at least twice a month.
  3. Don’t increase your milage too much week to week.  If you are new to marathon training, your plan should begin with either a walk/run method for the first few weeks, or run for time (30 mins, 45 mins, etc) rather than focus on the miles.  You should hit half the event milage by halfway through your training, with a gradual build to about 90% of the event milage and then…TAPER! 🙂  Everyone loves the taper.
  4. Schedule your long runs on the weekends, that way you have some time to recover before heading back to your daily work routine.
  5. Don’t be a slave to the plan!  If you feel like you need to shorten your long run, or need an extra rest day after that killer sprint workout take it!  Being flexible in your training will keep you injury free for event day.

tips for planning

If you don’t want to write your own, there are many plans out there to choose from.  Here are a few to get you started:

Motivation Monday – My Motivation wall

Over the last few weeks I’ve slowly been setting up our little home gym area again.  We took it down before #babylove arrived, purely for space reasons.  But now that we’ve canceled our gym membership it’s time to bust it back out!  I will be showing that off later this week, along with some tips to create a home gym space on a budget.

And part of that area is a motivation wall.  I want to show off my accomplishments and remind myself of how far I’ve come.  It’s also a place to post my goals and keep myself on track.

So here it is!

Race Medals

First I finally have a display area for my race medals and bibs.  I had forgotten just how many race bibs I had!

bibs and quotes

Next, some motivational quotes and goals for the rest of the year.  I hope that by seeing these in my face everyday will keep me on track this summer and beyond.

So I just got some cardboard letters, paint and some brushes and got to painting my RUN sign.  Next I just attached it to the wall with 3M Command strips.  For the Bibs I attached them to the wall with 3M command strips and a new product they put out…plastic clothespins!  They are really cool…so I can change them out without having to redo the entire set up!  For the quote/goal board I painted the frame of something I had gotten and used as a paint chip calendar a while back, but the spaces were not big enough for our lives…anyway…so it was just plain glass with a black backing…perfect for those neon dry erase markers I snapped up a while back.  I will change out the quotes from time to time, to keep it fresh and motivating.  It looks awesome and I am so glad that it’s done.  I have felt a lot of pride in myself over the last week seeing this up on my wall.

Do you have a motivational wall, or motivation board?  What keeps you inspired everyday?  Share a photo on the Facebook page with the hashtag #mymotivationwall

Happy Belated Blogiversary to me!

I totally missed it!

Little Runner Girl has been blogging for 3 years as of April 4th!  It’s been an awesome 3 years with so many life changes!

I walked a half marathon, ran a half marathon, got married, had a baby, drove across the country…twice, got fit, got fat, got hippie.  Went frugal, got clean, met Isagenix

I am really excited for the next few years of life changes and blogging!  Thanks for following along in my journey, and sticking it out with me!

Mommy uncensored: I’m not Pinterest Perfect, and that’s ok

I remember when I discovered Pinterest.  I was working a job I hated, and it was an escape for me.  I scrolled endlessly through images of fit bodies, amazing looking foods and the most stylish living spaces.  I planned and plotted to try the crafts and DIYs…

But now I see them and think…who the hell has the time?!

I start a lot of projects that take months to finish.  Sometimes they never get finished.  The nursery wasn’t done when The Babe Arrived, and it’s still not “done”.   My Coffee bar is a “there I fixed it” with an antique dresser that was falling apart.

I’m fine with the fact that I don’t always make beautiful meals, I don’t create the most popular exercise routines, and that my house is a bit in chaos most of the time.  I try to get crafty, and do some fun and creative things in my home, and sometimes they don’t always turn out the way I thought they would…but I just think…”eh, that’s good enough.”  My good enough is totally ok.

I love Pinterest, but it’s a time suck.  Seriously.  I can spend waste hours scrolling through boards and and taking detours on other people’s blogs.  I’ve stumbled upon some of my favorite blogs that way.  I also think that Pinterest has given women yet another unattainable standard to reach for.  I love seeing these immaculate homes, fashionable clothes, and perfectly plated meals…but I don’t think that they are reality for most of us.

When I found out I was pregnant, I took to Pinterest right away because I was so excited to plan a nursery, a baby shower and my baby’s childhood experiences.  I did get a lot of inspiration from Pinterest…but I would have taken weekly Bump pics even without seeing similar photos…

They are not all perfect, they aren’t going to be the most popular or re-pinned posts…and I don’t care.  I didn’t take them for the whole world…I took them for my little world.  For my little Babe to see them and appreciate them.

I’ve shared some of my DIYs…but they do not all turn out the way I want.  Like my attempt 3 attempts at an Infinity dress for the Wedding…

The dress that still is not completed, and might never be.  Dude…do you know how hard it is to make a wedding dress, AND make it adjustable for a growing belly?!  Really hard.  Especially if you are not a seamstress.  But the dress that I ended up buying, 2 days before the wedding was unbelievably gorgeous.

we did it!

And yeah…those wedding pics…rock my world.

The ring shot

I may not be a Pinterest Perfect Mom or wife…but I am the Perfect Mom and wife for my family.

Books aren’t always about the words

I recently discovered this new awesome site to make books called Blurb.   And now Blurb has incredible options to make your fashion/design books into top class, coffee table worthy, conversation pieces!

How to make a fashion book with Blurb:
Blurb is a cool company that lets you make books about anything that interests you.  And if you’re interested in fashion and style—and love to show it off—making a book of your personal fashion is a fantastic way to capture your sartorial genius for all time.  Whether you want it just for yourself, so you can look through your greatest hits, or you’re a bit of an Internet fashionista who wants to make a book to sell, you’ll find these tips pretty helpful.  And these tips aren’t just for fashion books…these photography tips are great for any photos you might be taking!

1. It’s all about lighting. To make your fashion really pop, choose natural light or studio light with a soft box (you can even make one from a lamp and last season’s white t-shirt). If you’re using a flash, you’ll probably want to bounce it or stick a diffusion filter on it.

2. Make a shot list. This is a critical step, and even more important if you are photographing models. Even if your model is just your best friend who owes you a favor, they’ll appreciate it if you know exactly what you want to shoot. Think about the poses you want to capture, the outfits you want them to wear, and the details that you want to highlight in every shot.

3. White balance (WB). Accurate color and skin tones come from making sure the WB function on your camera is set to your lighting situation.

4. Choose the right lens/zoom setting. If you’re using a wide angle, you’re going to lose your beautiful lines (and your model may never forgive you). If you have a camera with different zoom levels, zoom out to minimize lens barrel distortion.

5. Keep it stylish. It’s a fashion shoot, after all. Play music, keep things moving, try new angles. Attitude, attitude, attitude.

6. Dress it up. Make your book as fashionable as the clothing featured in it. Choose a simple design that doesn’t upstage the clothing, but still looks chic. Pick a size and paper type that showcases the work brilliantly.

If you’ve ever paid attention to what’s on the catwalk, you know that fashion means different things to different people. Follow your own fashion obsessions and document them in a fashionable book. If you look good today in person, imagine looking great forever on the printed page with Blurb! Start your Blurb book now and Save 25% on print book orders of $75+ at Blurb.

28 Day No Spending Challenge Day 26

Today is day 26 of our 28 Day No Spending Challenge

no spending

And since it’s Wednesday we are starting to think about our weekend plans, and what better way to spend a weekend night than a free date night!

So today I’m planning ways to enjoy my Hubby’s company, and do something fun…for free!  Ruth has some great ideas…but Minnesota has migrated to the arctic circle apparently…so the outdoor dates are a no go.  But I really love the brewery tour idea!  The Hubster has a birthday coming up…and I think it would be awesome to book a sitter and tour a local brewery for his birthday!

I also loved her spa day idea too, now that we’ve made a bunch of at-home spa treatments.  I am sure that after all of his long hours this tax season that he would love a foot rub, and a back massage!  P.S. I would too!!
